Councilmember Vincent C. Gray’s Statement on the U.S. Supreme Court’s Overturning Roe v. Wade
"The District of Columbia Will Continue to Respect Every Woman’s Right to Choose!"
Washington, D.C. – Today, Ward 7 Councilmember Vincent C. Gray, Chair of the D.C. Council Committee on Health, issued the following statement following the Supreme Court of the United States overturning Roe v. Wade:
“While testifying to the U.S. Senate, recently appointed Supreme Court Justices swore they believed Roe v. Wade was settled law. We never believed them but held out hope that their agenda would never become reality," said Vincent C. Gray. "Today, their appalling deceit was revealed."
“District residents are rightfully upset about the decision to overturn Roe. I assure them that women's health and reproductive rights are safe here in the District of Columbia," said Gray.
"We have fought and won before and, when need be, we will fight and win again. We do not cower, back down or yield to those who seek to further limit our freedoms. Our struggle to achieve Statehood and full representation as Americans has strengthened and united us. We are prepared for the fight that overturning Roe has sparked."
“I will not yield in defending the rights of District residents and I stand with all women whose rights were taken away today," said Gray. "Elections have consequences. I encourage everyone to consider what the Supreme Court just did, what the former president attempted to do on January 6,2021, and all the other attacks on our freedoms and institutions. Educate yourself and others, activate, organize, and vote in November.”
