Funding Our Priorities

May 8, 2023

Dear neighbors,

D.C. Council committees have made their budget recommendations and there is reason for concern. A number of projects and programs that are vital to Ward 7 and healthcare were cut during the committee mark-up process.

I have written to Chairman Mendelson and asked that he restore funding and fully implement the items we requested.

Mayor Bowser has raised similar concerns. In a letter to the Council, she wrote, "Proposed reductions would leave behind residents in Ward 7 and Ward 8."

One of the top concerns shared by the Mayor and myself is a complete cut to the DC Streetcar extension into Ward 7 along Benning Road. If FY24 funds for this project are eliminated, the future of the Streetcar will be in limbo and much-needed bridge repairs (for example, to the Willie J. Hardy, formerly Whitlock bridge) will also be delayed. Federal funds may be jeopardized, too.

Mayor Bowser said, "These cuts are inequitable and avoidable." I wholeheartedly agree.

I have also requested that the Chairman fund a Ward 7 Circulator route and restore funding cut from senior dental care, behavioral health adult/youth transitional services, and transportation to and from therapeutic recreation programs until the Joy Evans Center opens in late 2024.

The Council is faced with challenging economic conditions as we prepare the FY24 budget. With that in mind, our spending requests were prudent and essential. Cuts made during the committee mark-up process are not final and, indeed, developments that have taken place as recently as last week have freed up money that can fund the Ward 7 and healthcare priorities outlined by the Mayor and myself.

Council Chairman Phil Mendelson needs to hear your voice, too. You can send him an email by clicking here. The Chairman is amending committee budgets this week. The full Council will be presented with his changes next week and begin the approval process thereafter. Please let Chairman Mendelson know that you support these important projects and services. Your voice is key to our success in restoring these funds.

In service,

Vince
