GRAY ON H.R. 4984 AND THE FUTURE OF RFK STADIUM CAMPUS

September 20, 2023

Washington, D.C. -- Today, the office of D.C. Councilmember Vincent C. Gray released the following from Gray:

“The House Oversight and Accountability Committee's affirmative vote today on H.R. 4984, the D.C. Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act, keeps the door open for the District to fathom a wide range of possibilities for developing and preserving the RFK Stadium Campus, an integral part of Ward 7 and a site that presents exciting opportunities for District residents. I am also pleased that a proposed amendment to H.R. 4984 failed. It would have micro-managed, if not altogether hamstrung our local spending autonomy and, as well, put the District at a distinct negotiating disadvantage with surrounding jurisdictions," said D.C. Councilmember Vincent C. Gray.

"I have always been open to discussions about re-imagining the RFK site, including the possibility of a new stadium, provided the best interests of District residents --in particular those in the surrounding communities-- are at the forefront of any outcome. Given today's encouraging vote, I am eager to learn more about what the Josh Harris Group has in mind for the future of the team. Certainly, many discussions will follow," said Gray.

"Ultimately, more details need to come into focus, including the team's preference and, of course, the Council and mayor reaching an agreement on what is best for the District. We are one more step along in a process that is equally exciting and uncertain, but with each step an emerging picture becomes clearer," said Gray.
